Brief Biography:

Angie was born and raised in Three Forks, Montana, a small town at the headwaters of the Missouri River. She moved to the river’s end at St. Louis to attend college, where she found her love for literature and her love for life, her husband. They have two grown girls whom they raised in New Hampshire, Nicaragua, Kansas, and Texas. Angie stayed at home to raise her two girls through many moves, including two years co-administering a Christian school for street kids in Managua. When the girls were in elementary school in Texas, she began teaching high school literature. Teaching both AP and remedial seniors, often using the same techniques, she found that good teaching is, at its heart, a beautiful, demanding, and humane endeavor. When the girls were in middle school, she left teaching to become general editor and then director of product development at a small educational publishing company, a role that fulfilled her for the next ten years. Eventually, her interest in teaching was rekindled through introduction to the world of classical education. She currently serves as the Dean of Academics for Upper School at a classical academy in Florida where she also co-teaches modern literature and senior thesis.

What brought you to Hillsdale?

As I taught in a Hillsdale-member charter school over four years, I learned so much about the philosophy of classical education and the best practices that naturally result from considering the full formation of the human as the end of education. I appreciate daily the valuable, applicable training we receive at Hillsdale College every summer. Two years ago, when I was tasked with a leadership role, I knew I needed classical leadership training as well. However, to continue serving the community in Florida, I had to find a reputable, online program. When Hillsdale opened their hybrid MCEL program, I was very excited and grateful for the opportunity to learn from the institution I admire so much and the professors I’d come to know through summer conference!

What is distinctive about Hillsdale’s Graduate School of Classical Education?

The three-year hybrid MCEL program includes an on-site class each summer. Though we meet online each week from all over the U.S. and across the globe, our cohort began this journey together, face-to-face, sharing meals, classes, and free time at Hillsdale. Through lectures and shared meals, we also interacted with all our professors and came to know a bit about them and what they’ll teach us. Now, when we come together as faces on screen each week, we know each other more intimately due to the unique opportunity Hillsdale has provided in this online degree experience.
