Brief Biography:
Nathan grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and received his B.A. in Rhetoric and Public Address from Hillsdale College in 2020. He also studied organ performance at Hillsdale. After graduating, he began teaching at Our Savior Lutheran School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At Our Savior, he is the fifth and sixth grade homeroom teacher and teaches Upper School courses in Grammar, Writing, Literature, Rhetoric, and Logic. He also teaches piano lessons and plays organ at Our Savior Lutheran Church. When he’s not teaching, studying, or making music, Nathan enjoys running outdoors and watching his favorite sports teams.
Research Interests:
I am interested in the intersection of theology and music with classical education. I enjoy reading about how the principles of liturgy inform the way a classical school functions.
Recent Professional Developments:
I received the MCEL Scholarship from the Hillsdale K-12 Office.
Post-Graduation Plans:
I would like to work in administration in a classical school. I would also like to remain in the classroom in some capacity. Administrators should remain excellent teachers, even if it’s only one class a day.
Extracurricular Academic Activities:
I enjoy reading and memorizing poetry, particularly the poems of Robert Frost, John Donne, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. I also enjoy learning new piano and organ music—especially the music of Johann Sebastian Bach—and enjoy giving recitals from time to time. I coach our school’s boys’ basketball team.
What brought you to Hillsdale?
I received my undergraduate degree from Hillsdale, so after teaching in a classical school for a few years, Hillsdale was a logical choice to continue my education.
What has been the thing you’ve appreciated most about your time here?
The students and professors are well-rounded and interesting people. I enjoy discussing class material with our cohort, but it’s also been fun to interact with the cohort and professors on campus in the summer and continue to get to know everyone better outside of the classroom or Zoom screen.
