Hillsdale College

Brief Biography:

Born to a military family, Paul is the fifth of seven children. He was classically homeschooled through elementary and middle school until his family settled in southern California where Paul attended a private Christian high school. Through teachers and family friends, Paul learned about Hillsdale College. Upon arrival, he was immediately enamored with the depth of the western theological tradition and pursued a Religion major and Classical Education minor. Paul met his wife, Danae, at Hillsdale College, and they got married after graduating in May 2022. They spent the last three years living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Paul—striving to impart just a sliver of what he inherited—taught middle school literature and high school theology at a private, Christian classical school.

Research Interests:

The place of theology in Christian classical schools, censorship in education, Protestant political theology.

What brought you to Hillsdale?

Though I found great fulfillment and joy in my three years of teaching, I always had a desire to be a student again and hone my teaching craft. As I gradually learned more about the MACE program through its professors and alumni, it became clear that this was a place of true character formation.

What is distinctive about Hillsdale’s Graduate School of Classical Education?

The program treats students as human beings with unique academic interests, personal histories, and familial responsibilities. It is abundantly clear that the professors desire that I become a better man—not just student and teacher—throughout my time in the program. Professors are accessible and wise; staff are considerate and joyful. The cohort model further exemplifies the program’s distinctly human character, as students are drawn into friendship through shared trials and delights in the classroom and beyond.
